TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to No. 12 Florida State 3-0 (21-25, 20-25, 19-25) on Sunday afternoon in ACC action at Tully Gym in Tallahassee, Fla.
Victoria Hamsher led the Hokies (13-10, 6-7 ACC) with 10 kills while hitting .571 on the attack. Cara Baarendse added seven kills and tallied five blocks and seven digs on the defensive side. Jordan Fish and Allison Munter put up 17 and 15 assists, respectively. Morgan O’Neill had nine digs.
Ashley Neff had 10 kills and seven blocks for the Seminoles (22-2, 12-1 ACC). Olivera Medic added eight kills. Sarah Wickstrom had 20 assists with Duygu Duzceler adding 14. Katie Mosher posted 16 digs.
The Hokies held an early advantage in the opening set and were up 9-6 before the Seminoles went on a run to tie it at nine. Florida State extended its run, taking a 14-11 lead. FSU went on top 18-14, but Tech responded with a 4-0 run to knot it at 18 all. The two teams traded points and were tied at 21 before FSU closed out the set with a 4-0 run to win 25-21.
Virginia Tech and Florida State kept it close in the opening part of the second set and were tied at 11. The Seminoles broke open the scoring, taking a 14-11 advantage. Virginia Tech looked to make a run, closing the gap to one (14-13), but FSU responded to go up 18-14. Tech again answered, tying the set at 19, but the Seminoles went on a 6-1 run to take the set 25-20.
In the final set, the two teams were again tied early at 10, but FSU went on a 6-2 run to go on top 16-12. The Hokies responded, closing the gap to one at 16-15. Tech would get no closer as the Seminoles took the third set 25-19.
Florida State hit .266 (41-16-94) on the attack while Virginia Tech hit .179 (36-19-95). FSU recorded 10 team blocks with the Hokies tallying seven. The Seminoles had 37 digs with Tech notching 31.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Friday, Nov. 2 when they host Clemson in a 7 p.m. match at Cassell Coliseum.
