CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to Miami 3-0 (26-28, 14-25, 24-26) on Friday evening at the Knight Complex in Coral Gables, Fla.
Jennifer Wiker led the Hokies (13-9, 6-6 ACC) with 11 kills while Cara Baarendse added eight, hitting .533 on the attack. Samantha Gostling and Kathryn Caine tallied six each. Jordan Fish and Allison Munter put up 20 and 16 assists, respectively. On the defensive side, LaTasha Samson-Akpan tallied four blocks and Morgan O’Neill had seven digs.
Taylor Hollins had 14 kills for Miami (19-3, 11-1 ACC) while Savanah Leaf tallied 13 and Alexis Mourning added 10. Nrithya Sundararaman notched 36 assists and three blocks. Defensively, Ryan Shaffer posted eight digs and Emani Sims had a trio of blocks.
In the opening set, Virginia Tech and Miami kept it close, trading points with 14 ties in the set. The two teams were tied at 11 before the Hokies went on a 5-1 run to go on top 16-12. Tech maintained its lead, but the Hurricanes rallied to tie the set at 23. The teams were knotted at 26 before Miami secured the points to take the set 28-26.
Miami got out to an early lead in the second set, going up 12-6. The Hokies closed the gap to three at 15-12, but the ‘Canes went on a run to take the 19-12 advantage. Miami won the set 25-14, taking a 2-0 lead in the match.
The final set was much like the first with the two teams keeping it close with 10 ties. Miami opened up the scoring going up 12-8, but the Hokies responded to cut it down to one (13-12). The Hurricanes again extended their lead, going on top 18-15, but Tech answered to tie the set at 19. Virginia Tech and Miami traded points over the next several rallies and were tied at 24, but an error by the Hokies followed by a kill from Mourning scored the points for the Hurricanes to win 26-24, securing the match.
Miami hit .333 (47-15-96) on the attack while the Hokies knocked down .292 (39-11-96). The Hurricanes recorded six team blocks and 39 digs while Tech tallied 4.5 blocks and 30 digs.
The Hokies will remain in Florida to play No. 12 Florida State on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m. in Tallahassee, Fla.
