BLACKSBURG, Va. – Kathryn Caine and Victoria Hamsher combined for 29 kills, hitting over .500 on the attack to lead the Virginia Tech volleyball team past ACC foe Duke, 3-1 (25-16, 25-18, 22-25, 25-19) on Saturday evening at Cassell Coliseum.
Caine knocked down 16 kills for the Hokies (13-8, 6-5 ACC) while hitting .538 on the attack. Hamsher added 13 kills with a hitting percentage of .526. Jordan Fish and Allison Munter put up 33 and 15 assists, respectively.
The Hokies were also strong on the defensive side, LaTasha Samson-Akpan recorded eight blocks for Tech while Cara Baarendse added six. Morgan O’Neill picked up a match-high 21 digs with Kenedy McGrath recording 14.
Duke (12-11, 3-8 ACC) was led by Emily Sklar with 14 kills. Christiana Gray added 10. Maggie Deichmeister posted 21 assists while Kelsey Williams tallied 17. Ali McCurdy had 19 digs for the Blue Devils.
Hokies got out to a 6-0 run, forcing an early Duke timeout in the opening set. Tech extended its lead and was up by 10 at 14-4. Virginia Tech took its largest lead a few rallies later, going up 12 (18-6). Duke looked to make a late run and cut the gap to eight at 22-15. A kill from Caine and back-to-back blocks by the Tech defense secured the points for the 25-16 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
In the second set, the Hokies were up 12-8, but the Blue Devils kept it close and pulled within two at 16-14. Tech responded with a 6-1 run to go on top 22-15. Duke would get no closer than four as Virginia Tech secured the set 25-18, taking a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Duke came out strong in the third set, getting out to a 14-7 lead. Tech looked to make a run, cutting it down to two at 18-16, but the Blue Devils maintained their advantage going up 22-18. Duke was at set point (24-20), but the Hokies again closed it to two. A kill from Sklar gave the Blue Devils the point for the 25-22 win.
Tech jumped out to a 12-5 lead in the final set. The Blue Devils closed the gap to five at 20-15, but would get no closer as the Hokies rolled to the 25-19 win, securing the match 3-1.
The Hokies hit .228 (58-21-162) while holding the Blue Devils to a .123 (46-27-155) attack percentage. Tech recorded 16.5 team blocks to Duke’s nine. The Blue Devils had 73 digs to Tech’s 69.
Virginia Tech will be back on the court on Friday, Oct. 26 when the team travels to No. 24 Miami for a 6 p.m. match. The Hokies will remain in Florida to face No. 12 Florida State on Sunday, Oct. 28 at 1 p.m.
