Victoria Hamsher led the Hokies (12-8, 5-5 ACC) with 15 kills, hitting .417 on the attack. Jennifer Wiker, who was honored for her reaching her 1,000th career kill prior to the match, added to her total with 12. Samantha Gostling tallied 10 kills. Jordan Fish and Allison Munter split time at the setter spot with 29 and 15 assists, respectively.

On the defensive side for the Hokies, Cara Baarendse recorded 14 digs and seven blocks while LaTasha Samson-Akpan added six blocks. Morgan O’Neill posted 18 digs.

The Demon Deacons (8-14, 2-8 ACC) were led by Kristin Grissom with 12 kills and seven blocks. Andrea Beck added 10 kills. Danae Rosedall had 34 assists and Megan Miller notched a match-high 22 digs.

The Hokies got out to an early lead in the opening set, going up 11-8. Wake responded with a run to tie the set at 11. The two teams traded points over the next several rallies and were tied at 17 before Tech reclaimed the lead, going on top 19-17. The Deacs again answered, tying the set at 19. Wake and Virginia Tech were tied at 23 before the Deacs secured the points needed for the 25-23 win, taking a 1-0 lead in the match.

Wake Forest got out to the early lead in the second frame and was up 7-3 before the Hokies went on a 4-0 run to tie the set. Tech extended its run, going up 12-9 to force a Demon Deacon timeout. The Hokies went up 16-10, but the Deacs responded, cutting the lead down to two at 18-16. Virginia Tech maintained its lead and was up 20-16, but Wake pulled within one at 20-19. The Hokies closed out the set with a 5-0 run for the win, tying the match at one set each.

The Hokies held the advantage in the third set, getting out to a 12-8 lead. Wake kept it close and was within two at 15-13 before Tech extended its advantage to five (18-13). The Deacs again pulled within a pair (18-16), but the Hokies answered with a 5-2 run to go on top 23-18. Wake Forest closed the gap at 24-22, but a kill from Baarendse secured the point needed for the Hokies to take a 2-1 lead in the match.

In the final set, Tech came out strong and got out to a 14-9 lead. The Hokies led by their largest margin up eight at 20-12. Wake would get no closer than six over the final rallies as the Hokies secured the match with a 25-17 win in the fourth.

Tech hit .226 (55-22-146) on the attack as a team with the Deacs recording an attack of .122 (45-27-147). On the defensive side both teams tallied 11 blocks, but the Hokies had a 64-61 advantage in digs.

The Hokies will be back on the court on Saturday, Oct. 20 when they host Duke in a 6 p.m. match at Cassell Coliseum.
