BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to ACC foe North Carolina, 3-0 (22-25, 22-25, 14-25) on Sunday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum.

Jennifer Wiker and Samantha Gostling tallied 10 kills each for the Hokies (11-8, 4-5 ACC). Wiker also added three blocks on the defensive side. Jordan Fish put up 33 assists while Morgan O'Neill recorded 12 digs.

Carolina’s (15-4, 6-4 ACC) Lauren Adkins knocked down 15 kills while Cameron Van Noy added 11. Cora Harms and Jordyn Schnabl tallied 27 and 11 assists respectively. Ece Taner had 15 digs.

In the opening set, the Hokies took an early 10-7 lead, but the Tar Heels responded to tie the set at 12. The two teams traded points over the next several rallies and were tied at 18 before UNC broke open the scoring to go on top 20-18. The Hokies tied it back up at 20, but the Tar Heels closed out the set with a 5-2 run to take the opening set 25-22.

The Tar Heels and Hokies kept it close in the second set with nine ties. The two teams were tied at 16 before UNC scored three unanswered to go on top. Tech looked to make a late run and cut the advantage down to one at 23-22, but back-to-back kills by the Tar Heels gave them the points to claim the set 25-22.

Carolina got out to the early 9-2 lead in the third set. Tech was unable to get anything going offensively as the Tar Heels took their largest lead at 23-13. UNC secured the final set, 25-14.

Tech hit .255 (39-13-102) from the field while North Carolina knocked down .336 (47-11-107). The Tar Heels posted just one block while the Hokies had six on the defensive side.

The Hokies will be back on the court on Friday, Oct. 19 at 7 p.m., when they host Wake Forest. The match marks the team’s annual “Dig Pink” event for breast cancer awareness.
