BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 23-25) decision to North Carolina State on Friday evening in ACC action at Cassell Coliseum.
Kathryn Caine hit .857 on the attack, recording 13 kills to lead the Hokies (11-7, 4-4 ACC). Samantha Gostling added 12 kills and Cara Baarendse tallied 10. Jordan Fish put up 49 assists. On the defensive side, Morgan O’Neill recorded a match-best 27 digs for the Hokies with Kenedy McGrath adding 17.
The Wolfpack’s (16-3, 6-2 ACC) Alesha Wilson had a match-high 19 kills and recorded 11 total blocks. Dariyan Hopper recorded 14. Megan Cyr posted 46 assists and Alston Kearns had 17 digs for NC State.
In the opening set, the Hokies led early, going up 13-7. Tech maintained its lead and was up 21-13, but the Wolfpack rallied and closed out the opening set with a 12-2 run to take a 25-23 win and a 1-0 match lead.
The two teams kept it close in the opening rallies of the second set and were tied at 10 before the Hokies pulled ahead to lead 13-10. Tech extended its advantage to 19-14, but NC State again looked to rally, closing the gap to two (21-19). The Hokies closed out the set, outscoring the Wolfpack 4-0 to win 25-19 and tie the match at 1-1.
Tech and State battled back and forth in the third set with 13 ties and were tied at 16 before the Wolfpack moved in front by two. The Hokies cut it down to one several times and trailed at 23-22 forcing a State timeout. NCSU pulled in front by two at 24-22, but a kill from Caine again cut into the margin. The Wolfpack secure the set with a kill from Wilson to take a 2-1 match lead.
In the final frame, the Hokies and the Wolfpack again battled in the opening rallies and were tied at 11. NC State pulled into the lead to go on top 16-12, but the Hokies answered with a 4-1 run to cut the lead at 17-16. The Hokies kept close and trailed by one at 20-19 before NCSU extended its lead to 24-19. Tech looked to make a late run and cut it down to 24-22, but the Wolfpack’s Wilson again knocked down a kill to secure the set 25-22 and the match.
Tech recorded 62 digs on defense while NCSU had 58. The Wolfpack recorded 12 team blocks to the Hokies’ four. Virginia Tech hit .192 on the attack with NC State recording an attack percentage of .194.
The Hokies will be back on the court on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 1 p.m., when they host North Carolina at Cassell Coliseum.
