CLEMSON, S.C. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to Clemson, 3-0 (20-25, 23-25, 20-25) on Saturday night in an ACC match-up at Jerey Gymnasium in Clemson, S.C.
Jennifer Wiker recorded her second double-double of the season for the Hokies (11-6, 4-3 ACC) with 17 kills and 10 digs. Cara Baarendse tallied nine kills for Tech. Jordan Fish put up 39 assists and Morgan O’Neill notched 14 digs.
Sandra Adeleye paced the Tigers (12-6, 3-4 ACC) with 10 kills while Serenat Yaz added nine. Hannah Brenner had 35 assists. Natalie Patzin posted 15 digs and Alexa Rand recorded eight blocks on the defensive side.
Clemson and Virginia Tech kept it close early in the opening set, but CU extended its lead to 19-12. Tech closed it to six at 21-15, but the Tigers extended their lead to 23-16. The Hokies looked to make a late run and cut it to four at 24-20, but the Tigers secured the set with a kill to win 25-20.
In the second set, the two teams again kept it close and were tied at 14, before the Hokies took a 17-15 lead off a Wiker kill. The Hokies extended their lead to 20-17, but the Tigers responded with a 5-2 run to tie the set at 22. Tech and CU were tied at 23, before Clemson secured the points needed for a 25-23 win to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Clemson got out to a 6-0 lead in the third set, but the Hokies answered to cut the gap to one at 8-7. CU again extended its lead, going on top 15-9. Tech went on a run, cutting it down to four at 20-16, but Clemson went on a 4-1 run to pull ahead 24-17. Tech looked to rally and trailed 24-20, but a kill by the Tigers claimed the match.
The Tigers hit for .259 (41-12-112) while Tech attacked .186 (43-21-118). Virginia Tech recorded 52 digs to Clemson’s 50. The Hokies also had four aces with Baarendse notching a pair.
Tech returns home to Cassell Coliseum for its next match, facing NC State on Friday, Oct. 12 in a 7 p.m. match.
