CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team completed an ACC road sweep on Sunday, downing Boston College, 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-22) in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Jennifer Wiker tallied 12 kills to lead the Hokies (11-4, 4-1 ACC). Samantha Gostling posted 11 kills in the win. Kathryn Caine picked up where she left off after the Maryland match, knocking down 10 kills while hitting .571 on 14 attempts with just two errors. Caine hit .588 on the weekend. Jordan Fish put up 38 assists while Morgan O’Neill notched a match-high 22 digs.
Boston College (8-9, 2-3 ACC) was paced by Katty Workman with 13 kills. Kellie Barnum had 19 assists while Franny Hook and Lauren Fields notched nine digs each.
In the opening set, the Hokies got out to a 15-8 lead. The Eagles looked to make a run, closing the gap to two at 15-13. Boston College trailed by one at 17-16, but the Hokies answered with a 4-0 run to go up 21-16. Tech maintained its lead and rolled to the 25-18 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
BC took the early lead in the second set and was up 9-4, forcing a Virginia Tech timeout. The Hokies answered with a 10-3 run to go on top 14-12. The two teams were tied at 15, but Tech reclaimed the lead and went up 20-17. Boston College again looked to make a run, tying the set at 20 and again at 21, but the Hokies closed out the set with a 4-1 run to claim the 25-22 win.
The two teams kept it close in the opening rallies of the third set and were tied at 13 before the Hokies went on a 6-0 run to take the 19-13 advantage. Tech extended its lead to 23-16, but the Eagles responded, closing the gap to 24-22. A kill from Gostling on the final play gave the Hokies the point for the 25-22 win to take the match.
Tech held BC to a hitting percentage of .115 while recording an attack percentage of .222. The Hokies had 58 digs and 6.5 team blocks to the Eagles’ 48 and 3.0, respectively.
The Hokies will return to the court Friday, Oct. 5 at Georgia Tech. Match time is slated for 7 p.m. in Atlanta, Ga.
