COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team held off ACC rival Maryland, 3-2 (25-20, 20-25, 22-25, 25-19, 16-14) in an exciting five-set match on Friday evening in College Park, Md.
Kathryn Caine knocked down 13 kills, hitting .600 to lead the Hokies (10-4, 3-1 ACC). Samantha Gostling added 11 kills while Cara Baarendse tallied 10 with a .474 hitting percentage. Jordan Fish put up 40 assists. Defensively, Baarendse had three blocks and Morgan O’Neill recorded 17 digs.
The Terps’ (9-6, 1-3 ACC) Ashleigh Crutcher posted a match-high 26 kills with Adreen Elliott adding 15. Mackenzie Dagostino tallied a double-double with 27 assists and 17 digs.
In the opening set the Hokies and Terps kept it close with seven lead changes and 10 ties. The two teams were tied at 16 before Tech went on a 3-0 run to break open the scoring, taking the 19-16 lead off an ace from Jennifer Wiker. Maryland got no closer than two over the final rallies as the Hokies took the set 25-20 and a 1-0 lead in the match.
Virginia Tech and Maryland again kept it close in the second set, but the Terps went on a run to take an 18-15 lead, forcing a Virginia Tech timeout. The Hokies closed the gap to two on the next rally, but were unable to get any closer as the Terps claimed the second set 25-20 to tie the match.
Maryland got out to the lead in the third set, going up 19-14, but the Hokies responded with a 5-0 run, tying the score at 19. The Terrapins reclaimed the lead, going on top 21-19. Tech trailed by one at 23-22, but Terps secured the points needed for the 25-22 win, taking a 2-1 lead in the match.
The Terps took an early 4-1 lead in the fourth frame, but the Hokies went on a run sparked by back-to-back aces from freshman Kenedy McGrath to tie the score at nine. The two teams traded points and were tied at 10 before Virginia Tech scored three straight to take the 13-10 advantage. Maryland answered and the two teams were tied as late as 19. Tech again went on a run fueled by a pair of aces from McGrath as the Hokies closed out the set for the 25-19 win, knotting the match at 2-2.
Virginia Tech took the lead early in the fifth frame, up 9-6. Maryland made a run to tie the score at 12. The two teams were tied at 13 and 14, but kills from Caine and Wiker gave Tech the points for the 16-14 win, clinching the match.
The Hokies held Maryland to a .198 (62-29-167) hitting percentage in the match while knocking down .237 with 51 kills on 139 attempts with 18 errors.
Tech will be back on the court on Sunday, Sept. 30 in a noon match at Boston College.
