BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team battled No. 15 Florida State to five sets before falling 3-2 (25-19, 19-25, 25-22, 15-25, 11-15) on Friday evening at Cassell Coliseum.
A trio of players hit double-digit kills for the Hokies (8-4, 1-1 ACC) with Samantha Gostling and Jennifer Wiker recording 13 each. Cara Baarendse added 11 kills. Gostling also picked up her second career double-double in as many games, adding 12 digs on the defensive side. Jordan Fish also recorded a double-double with 49 assists and 10 digs.
Defensively, Morgan O’Neill led with 23 digs. Victoria Hamsher had seven blocks while Kathryn Caine added six.
Ashley Neff led the Seminoles (9-2, 1-1 ACC) with 16 kills. Marija Milosavljevic added 14 kills and Olivera Medic tallied a double-double with 12 kills and 18 digs. Duygu Duzceler had 33 assists. Katie Mosher recorded 24 digs in the match.
In the opening set the two teams kept it close early and were tied at eight before the Hokies went on a 6-1 run to pull ahead 14-9. The Seminoles responded, cutting the gap down to one at 15-14. Tech held on to the lead and closed out the set with a 10-5 run to claim the 25-19 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
The Seminoles took the lead in the second set and were up 14-10 before the Hokies closed the gap to one (15-14) behind the serving of Wiker. FSU went on a run to extend its lead to 20-14. The Hokies were unable to overcome the deficit as Florida State took the set, 25-19 and tied the match at 1-1.
Tech got out to a 12-8 lead in the third set. The Hokies maintained their lead and were up 16-12 until the Seminoles went on a 4-1 run to cut it down to one at 18-17. Virginia Tech and FSU traded points over the next several rallies with the Seminoles down 22-21. Florida State was unable to overtake the Hokies as Tech closed out the set for the 25-22 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
Florida State opened the fourth set with a 7-0 run and never looked back. The Seminoles took their largest lead of the match at 18-5. Tech cut it down to eight (21-13), but was unable to rally as FSU won 25-15 to knot the match at two sets each.
In the final frame, Florida State went up 5-1 early, but the Hokies responded to take a 6-5 lead. The two teams traded points and were tied at 7-7 before the Seminoles went on a 5-3 run to take a 12-10 lead, forcing a Tech timeout. The Hokies scored on the next rally to cut it to one, but the Seminoles closed out the set with a 3-0 run to win 15-11, securing the match.
Tech will return to the court to host Miami on Sunday, Sept. 23 in a 1 p.m. match at Cassell Coliseum.
