CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team claimed a 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-16, 25-23) win against Liberty on Saturday afternoon during the second day of the Marriott Cavalier Classic in Charlottesville, Va. With the victory, the Hokies win the tournament title.
Samantha Gostling led the Hokies (8-3), tallying a double-double with 21 kills and 10 digs. Jennifer Wiker had 13 kills while Cara Baarendse added 12 kills on 16 attempts, hitting .750 for the Hokies. Jordan Fish put up 57 assists and Morgan O’Neill posted 15 digs.
The Flames (8-3) were led by Caroline Douglas and Loren Thomas with 14 kills each. Jade Craycraft tallied 41 assists and Gabrielle Shipe had 13 digs.
Tech took a lead in the opening set, going up 12-7. The Hokies increased their lead to seven, but the Flames cut the gap to four at 23-19. A miscue by the Flames and a kill from Wiker gave Virginia Tech the points for the 25-20 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
Liberty got out to the early advantage in the second set, going on top 13-8 to force a Virginia Tech timeout. The Flames continued to control the set and went up 21-15. Tech looked to make a late run, closing the gap to three at 22-19, but the Flames held on for the 25-21 win to knot the match at 1-1.
In the third frame, the Hokies took a 12-5 advantage early. Virginia Tech maintained its lead and took its largest at 20-10 off a kill from Gostling. Liberty would get no closer than eight as the Hokies rolled to the 25-16 win and a 2-1 lead in the match.
The two teams kept it close in the fourth set with 14 ties. Tech and Liberty traded points and were tied for the last time at 21. A kill from Baarendse and a kill from Fish put Tech up 23-21. The Flames would score on the next rally, but Wiker knocked down a kill to put the Hokies on match point. Tech secured the point needed off a kill from Gostling, securing the set, 25-23 and the match.
Virginia Tech will return to Cassell Coliseum to host its ACC home opener on Friday, Sept. 21 at 7 p.m. against defending conference champion Florida State. The Hokies will also host Miami on Sunday, Sept. 23 in a 1 p.m. match.
