Hokies sweep Cavaliers, 3-0 in ACC opener

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Sophomore Kathryn Caine tallied 11 kills as the Virginia Tech volleyball team defeated rival Virginia, 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 25-17) in the ACC opener for both teams on Friday evening as part of the Marriott Cavalier Classic at Memorial Gymnasium in Charlottesville, Va.

Caine hit for .579 on the attack with 11 kills on 19 attempts with no errors for the Hokies (7-3, 1-0 ACC). Samantha Gostling and Jennifer Wiker added nine kills each. Jordan Fish tallied 34 assists while Morgan O'Neill had 14 digs. Victoria Hamsher recorded six blocks.

Tech recorded 10 team blocks and kept the Cavaliers (4-6, 0-1 ACC) to just a .108 hitting percentage with 31 kills on 102 attempts and 20 errors. Offensively, the Hokies hit for .371 with 43 kills on 97 attempts and just seven errors.

Tori Janowski led UVa with 10 kills while Natalie Bausback tallied eight. Rachel Gray had 17 assists and 12 digs for a double-double. Emily Rottman added 10 digs.

The Hokies and ‘Hoos kept it close in the opening set and were tied at nine before Tech went on a 5-0 run to pull ahead 14-9. Virginia chipped away at the lead and tied the set at 22, forcing a Tech timeout. The Hokies closed out the set with a trio of kills to claim the set 25-23.

Tech got out to an early lead in the second set, going up 12-5. Virginia never got closer than four as the Hokies rolled to the 25-15 win and a 2-0 lead in the match.

In the third set, Tech again took the quick lead, holding a 9-3 advantage early. UVa responded with a 7-2 run to close the gap to one at 11-10. The Hokies answered, extending their lead to 17-12 to force a Cavalier timeout. Virginia pulled within three (17-14), but would get no closer as Tech secured the set, 25-17 and the match.

The Hokies will remain in Charlottesville to face Liberty on Saturday in a 1 p.m. match at Memorial Gymnasium.
