HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to host team High Point, 3-1 (21-25, 34-32, 21-25, 20-25) on Saturday evening at the High Point University Classic in High Point, N.C.
Jennifer Wiker led Tech (6-3) with 20 kills. Kathryn Caine and Victoria Hamsher added 15 and 12, respectively. Jordan Fish recorded a double-double with 50 assists and 12 digs. Morgan O’Neill notched 17 digs.
Caine was named to the All-Tournament team after recording 32 kills and hitting .490 on the weekend. She also added six blocks.
The Panthers (7-4) had four players in double-digit kills with Kristin Heldt leading the way with 17. Chelsea Davis added 14 and Courtey Johnk tallied 12. Michelle Chakirelis rounded out the double-digit attack with 11. Maddie Simpson had 53 assists and Annemarie Chin had 23 digs for the Panthers.
The two teams kept it close in the opening set and were tied at 11, but the Panthers pulled ahead to take a 15-13 advantage. Tech closed the gap, pulling within one at 16-15 off a kill from Victoria Hamsher. HPU again extended its lead to go up three (18-15). The Hokies looked to make a run late as they again closed to within one at 20-19, but High Point closed out the set with a 5-2 run to win 25-21 and take a 1-0 lead in the match.
High Point jumped out to the early lead in the second set, going on top 7-3. The Hokies answered with an 11-3 run to take the 14-10 advantage and force a Panther timeout. HPU responded, pulling within one at 16-15. Tech again extended its lead to 19-16, but the Panthers kept it close and tied it at 19, forcing a Tech timeout. High Point pulled into the lead 23-21, but the Hokies tied it up. The two teams battled over the final points with nine more ties and were knotted at 32. A kill from Fish followed by an attack error by the Panthers gave Tech the points for the 34-32 win, tying the match at 1-1.
The two teams kept it close in the opening part of the third set and were tied at 13 before High Point went on a run to go up 17-13. Tech looked to make a run and cut the gap to three, but could get no closer than that as the Panthers took the third set 25-21 and a 2-1 lead in the match.
High Point got out to the 8-1 lead in the fourth frame, but Virginia Tech responded to tie the set at 11 off a kill from Samantha Gostling. The two teams tied four more times and were tied at 15 all, but the Panthers went on a 6-1 run to take the 21-16 lead in the set. Tech was unable to respond as HPU claimed the set 25-20, winning the match.
The Hokies will be back on the court to open the ACC slate on Friday, Sept. 14 at intra-state rival Virginia. Match time is set for 7 p.m.
