HIGH POINT, N.C. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team cruised past George Mason 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-20) on Saturday afternoon at the High Point University Classic in High Point, N.C.
Jennifer Wiker tallied 10 kills for Tech (6-2) in the win, hitting 52.9 percent on the attack. Samantha Gostling and Cara Baarendse each added eight kills while Gostling also tallied five blocks in the match. Jordan Fish put up 37 assists and Morgan O’Neill had nine digs.
Tech hit for 51.4 percent on the attack with 41 kills on 72 attempts with just four errors. George Mason hit 24.1 percent with 33 kills on 79 attempts and 14 errors.
The Patriots (2-7) were led by Lolade Owokoniran, Danielle Cook and Lana Zonjic with seven kills each. Lauren Goodell had 28 assists and Bernetta Moore posted seven digs.
In the opening set the Hokies got out to a 5-1 lead over the Patriots. George Mason cut the gap to two at 9-7, but Tech went on a 7-3 run to extend its lead to 16-10 off a Baarendse kill. The Hokies closed out the set outscoring the Patriots 9-4 to claim the 25-14 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
The second set played out much like the first as Tech got out to the quick lead. Virginia Tech Went up 21-11 off a Wiker ace and secured the win at 25-14 to take a 2-0 match lead.
In the final set the two teams kept it close with the Patriots trailing at 9-7 before the Hokies broke open the scoring with a 4-0 run to go up 13-7 and force a Mason timeout. The Patriots closed the gap to four several times over the rest of the set, but were unable to get any closer as the Hokies took the set 25-20, clinching the match.
Tech will be back on the court Saturday evening as the Hokies face host team High Point. Match time is slated for 7 p.m. at the Millis Center.
