BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team cruised past Harvard, 3-0 (25-12, 25-12, 25-15) during the morning session of the second day at the Hilton Garden Inn Hokie Invitational at Cassell Coliseum.
Samantha Gostling led the Hokies (3-2) on the attack with 10 kills. Victoria Hamsher tallied nine kills and recorded three blocks. Kathryn Caine and freshman Kennedy Bryan tallied seven kills each. Jordan Fish had 36 assists and Morgan O'Neill notched 12 digs.
The Crimson was led by Taylor Docter with six kills. Hannah Schmidt had 14 assists and Kristen Casey posted 11 digs.
Hokies came out strong in the opening set, hitting 42.9 percent on the attack with 15 kills. Tech jumped out to an early 15-2 lead behind the serving of freshman Kenedy McGrath who tallied a pair of aces during her 11 serve run. The Hokies rolled to the 25-12 win and a 1-0 lead in the match.
Tech and Harvard kept it close in the opening rallies of the second set and were tied at seven. The Hokies broke open the scoring off three back-to-back kills and a block all from Hamsher to go up 11-7, forcing a Harvard timeout. Tech increased its lead to 13-7, but the Crimson made a run to pull within four (14-10). Harvard would get no closer as Tech closed out the set with an 11-2 run.
In the third set, Tech took a quick 6-0 lead. Harvard scored a pair, but the Hokies went on a 6-0 run to go up 12-2. Virginia Tech took its largest lead at 15-3. Harvard cut the gap to eight over the final rallies and trailed by as much at 23-15, but an attack error from Harvard and an ace from Allison Munter gave the Hokies the points to clinch the set 25-15 and the match.
Tech will be back on the court Saturday evening for the final match of the tournament against Middle Tennessee at 7 p.m. in Cassell Coliseum.
