BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team rolled past Towson, 3-0 (25-17, 25-18, 25-20) in the Hokies’ 2012 home opener on Friday evening at Cassell Coliseum.

Tech (2-2) was led by senior Jennifer Wiker with 13 kills while adding four blocks for the Hokies. Samantha Gostling tallied nine kills and a pair of aces. Victoria Hamsher and Kathryn Caine had seven kills each. Caine, Hamsher and Cara Baarendse all hit for over 60 percent in the match.

Jordan Fish tallied 38 assists and Morgan O'Neill posted 11 digs on the defensive side for Tech.

The Tigers (5-1) were led by Katy Buck with nine kills while Marta Machos added eight. Aubrey Kirven had 28 assists and Paige Sekerak recorded 11 digs.

Tech hit for .565 in the opening set and got out to an early 12-7 lead. The Tigers closed the gap to three (15-12), but the Hokies responded to take a 19-14 advantage. Back-to-back kills from Gostling pushed Tech to a 21-14 lead. Towson got no closer than six as Virginia Tech claimed the set 25-17.

In the second set, the Hokies again got out to the quick lead, going up 12-7 behind a pair of aces from Gostling. The Hokies took their largest lead at 18-9 off a solo block from Baarendse. Towson closed the gap to six several times over the final rallies, but would get no closer as the Hokies rolled to an 25-18 win and 2-0 match lead.

The Hokies took an early 7-3 lead, but Towson kept it close, pulling within one at 13-12. Tech maintained the advantage and went up 15-12 off of kills from Wiker and Baarendse. Towson again closed the gap to 20-18, but that is as close as it would get as Tech closed out the set with a 5-2 run to claim the match.

Tech will be back on the court on Saturday, Sept. 1 when the Hokies host Harvard and Middle Tennessee during the second day of action at the Hilton Garden Inn Hokie Invitational. The Hokies will face Harvard at 12:30 p.m. before taking on MTSU at 7 p.m.
