CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team came up short in Florida this weekend as it fell at the University of Miami, 3-0 (23-25, 16-25, 19-25) on Sunday afternoon at the James Knight Complex on the Miami campus. Cara Baarendse once again paced the Hokie offense with 13 kills in the match, while Ali Becker spearheaded the attack for the Hurricanes with 13 kills of her own.

The match began with close, back-and-forth rallying as both teams took turns leading. Tech (13-11, 6-7 ACC) saw the advantage for much of the opening set, allowing the Hurricanes (19-3, 10-3 ACC) to tie things up on multiple occasions but also forcing them to play catch-up. After tying things up at 20, 21, 22 and 23, Miami rallied with two straight points to steal the first set, 25-23. Though the Hurricanes took the kills advantage, 19-14, the Hokies dominated the net, getting up for three total blocks while Miami did not make one.

The Hurricanes carried that momentum into the second set as they took off running after breaking an early 3-3 deadlock. A 5-1 run midway through the set would give Miami a comfortable lead and create a distance the Hokies would be unable to overcome. The Hurricanes took the 25-16 win and entered the intermission up 2-0 in the match. Hitting at a .325 clip, Miami held the Hokies to just a .171 hitting percentage, also taking the kills edge in the set, 16-12.

The third set began similar to the second as Miami jumped out to an early lead. The Hurricanes let Tech stick around for a bit longer this time, but still kept their distance. The Hokies battled back to get within two early on, but Miami quickly responded with another 5-1 run to greater the distance. The Hurricanes closed out the sweep with a 25-19 third-set win. Katie Gallagher threw down six kills in the set for Miami, who led on the attack, 20-13.

The Hurricanes took the kills advantage in the match, 55-39, as well the digs edge, 57-43. The Hokies led the way at the net though, with five total blocks, compared to Miami’s four.

Justine Record led the defense for the Hokies with 14 digs, while Erin Leaser tossed up a team-best 20 assists.

Lane Carico was the only player in the match with a double-double as she threw down 12 kills and scooped up 12 digs. Alex Johnson led the defense with 14 digs, while Gallagher handled the setting duties and tallied 39 assists.

The Hokies will continue road play next weekend as they travel to Winston-Salem, N.C., for a Friday evening match at Wake Forest. The match is set for 7 p.m.
