TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team’s three-match win streak was ended on Friday evening as No. 19 Florida State claimed a 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-12) victory at Tulley gym on the Florida State campus. Cara Baarendse led the Tech offense for the fourth straight match with 10 kills, while Jekaterina Stepanova threw down a team-best 15 kills for the Seminoles.

The Hokies (13-10, 6-6 ACC) jumped out to an early lead in the opening set but Florida State (18-4, 12-0 ACC) rallied with a 9-0 run to not only tie things up but take a 13-8 lead of its own. The Seminoles extended that lead to 17-10, but Tech refused to roll over and continued to battle late into the set, but the damage had been done as they took the set, 25-21.

Back-and-forth play began the second set as the Seminoles took the early advantage before Tech evened things up and kept it close. There were 11 ties and four lead changes in the set, but three consecutive errors by the Hokies late in the game created a difference that they were unable to overcome. Florida State took the 2-0 lead into the intermission after claiming a narrow, 25-23 victory in the second.

Carrying that momentum into the third set, the Seminoles began the set with a 7-1 run and never looked back. Florida State never allowed the Hokies to get anything going, extending its lead to as much as 13 before closing out the match with a 25-12 third-set victory.

The Seminoles took the kills advantage in the match, 18-12, but the Hokies dominated the net as they tallied 14.5, compared to Florida State’s 10.

Jennifer Wiker set a new career high at the net as she got up for nine in the match, while Victoria Hamsher led the way for the Hokies and matched her career high with 10 blocks.

The Seminoles saw two players tally double-digit numbers in kills, assists and digs. Elise Walch rounded out the kills leaders with 10 in the match, while Dugyu Duzceler and Sarah Wickstorm tossed up nearly identical number with 20 and 19 assists, respectively. Visnja Djurdjevic and Katie Mosher led the way in digs with 18 and 17, respectively.

The Hokies return to action on Sunday as they remain in the Sunshine State to face Miami at 1 p.m. The match will be Tech’s only televised match of the season and can be seen on RSN.
