CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team fell to the North Carolina Tar Heels 3-0 (22-25, 14-25, 17-25) at Carmichael Arena on the North Carolina campus Thursday evening. Samantha Gostling and Jennifer Wiker led the offense for the Hokies as each player notched nine kills, while Emily McGee was one of two players with double-digit kills, tallying 11 for Carolina.

The two teams began the match with close play as numerous ties and lead changes themed the opening rallies. The Tar Heels (15-4, 7-1 ACC) broke a 9-9 tie and took off from there, extending their lead to as much as seven points at one point. Despite the difference, the Hokies (10-9, 3-5 ACC) rallied back to get within two at 24-22, but Carolina closed the set out with a 25-22 win. Both teams threw down 14 kills in the opener, as well as two blocks. Sophomore Samantha Gostling led both teams with six kills in the set.

The Heels carried the momentum into the second set as they jumped out to an early lead and managed to keep their distance throughout. Carolina put together an 8-1 run to take a 15-7 lead and force Tech to call its final timeout. Gostling, along with junior Cara Baarendse recorded back-to-back kills to break the Heels’ rally, but Tech was unable to overcome the difference and fell 25-14 in the second set. Carolina took the kills edge, 14-6 as Shelbey Bleke tallied five of those kills for the Heels.

Back-and-forth play began the third set and even with a few ties, Carolina would never trail. The Hokies inched their way back into things and eventually tied it up at 16 apiece, but Carolina broke the deadlock with a 9-1 run to close out the set and the match at 25-17.

Carolina took the kills edge in the match, 45-29, as well as the digs edge, 41-36. The two teams played an even game at the net as both squads walked away with nine blocks.

The Hokies return to action tomorrow evening as they travel to Raleigh, N.C., to take on NC State at 7 p.m.
