BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team came up short against the No. 21 Miami Hurricanes, falling 3-0 (23-25, 20-25, 20-25) Friday evening at Cassell Coliseum. Senior Justine Record paced the Hokies with her sixth double-double of the season, as she tallied 12 kills and 11 digs. Ali Becker spearheaded the Canes’ offense with 13 kills, while Lane Carico also earned a double-double with 11 kills and 17 digs.
Tech (8-5, 1-1 ACC) got out to an impressive start in the first set and seemingly had the momentum in its hands, but the Canes (10-1, 1-1 ACC) battled back and tied things at six apiece. Play would continue to be close for the remainder of the set with neither team leading by more than two points until late in the set. Tech battled back from a three-point deficit to tie it up at 22 but Miami stole the set, 25-23. After battling through 11 ties, Tech took the kills edge in the opening game, 17-11.
Close play began the second set, but after breaking a 4-4 tie, Miami never looked back. Extending it lead to as much as seven, the Canes kept a comfortable distance and closed out the set 25-20. This time Miami took the kills advantage, 16-13 and held the Hokies to just a .163 hitting percentage, while hitting at a .353 clip itself.
The Canes opened the third set with a commanding presence, jumping out to an early, 8-2 lead, but the Hokies refused to back down and used an 8-2 run of their own to tie things up at 10 and force a Miami timeout. Though Tech kept things close for a short period, Miami again pulled away and despite a late effort from the Hokies, it ended the day with a 25-20 win in the third. The Canes again out-killed Tech, 16-13.
Despite the final outcome, statistically the match was very even as both teams finished the evening with 43 total kills. Miami took the slight edge in digs, 59-52, and total blocks, 9.0-5.0.
The Hokies will return to action tomorrow evening as they host No. 23 Florida State at 6 p.m. at Cassell Coliseum. The Seminoles will arrive in Blacksburg after sweeping Virginia tonight, 3-0.
