BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team tacked on its second sweep of the weekend as it defeated the Seton Hall Pirates 3-0 (25-22, 25-18, 25-21) at Cassell Coliseum on Saturday afternoon. The Hokies have yet to drop a set in the Hokie Invite as they extended their home tournament winning streak to 23 games. Junior Cara Baarendse paced the Tech offense with 10 kills, as she was the only player in the match to tally double-digit kills.
Tech (5-3) got out to a slow start in the opening set but quickly got things going with a 6-1 run after breaking an early 5-5 tie. Going up by as much as seven, the Hokies let Seton Hall (3-5) creep closer as play continued. The Pirates got to within three late in the set, but a big kill from sophomore Samantha Gostling out of a Tech timeout and another from sophomore Victoria Hamsher helped the Hokies seal a 25-22 victory to start the day.
The two teams were nearly even statistically in the first set, each tallying 11 kills, but nine attacking errors held the Pirates to just a .056 hitting percentage. The Hokies hit at a .241 clip in the set.
Tech allowed nine ties in the second set after jumping out to a small, but early lead. Seton Hall remained within striking distance and took its first lead after a Tech rotation error, which broke the 15-all score. The Hokies called a timeout after the miscommunication and later put together an 8-1 run to close out the set by a score of 25-18.
Baarendse pushed the Hokies in that set as she tallied five of her 10 kills in the game. The Hokies also took the 13-10 kills edge. Errors again haunted the Pirates in the second set as they racked up six.
The Pirates looked like they had stolen the momentum to open the third set, earning the first two points, but Tech broke the 2-2 tie and disallowed another lead change until it was 13-all. Seton Hall regained its early lead and went on a 4-1 run to force a Tech timeout.
Freshman Jordan Fish brought back a great set by the net for Gostling to throw down immediately following the timeout and a big block from redshirt junior Jennifer Wiker and Baarendse tied things up at 17 and forced Seton Hall to regroup.
Tech continued to roll from there as a powerful kill from Gostling sparked the Hokies. They eventually extended their lead to four at 23-19 and despite a late effort by Seton Hall, closed out the match with a 25-21 win.
The Pirates tallied 21 attacking errors in the match, which allowed them to hit at a .120 clip, while the Hokies took the kills edge 38-34, good for a .283 hitting percentage. Tech also tallied nine total blocks on the afternoon, while Seton Hall only made four.
The Hokies will wrap up play at the Hokie Invite this evening, taking on Tennessee at 7 p.m. The match will be broadcast with live audio and video on Hokies All-Access.
