BLACKSBURG, Va. – Extending its home tournament winning streak to 22 games, the Virginia Tech volleyball team opened the Hokie Invite with a dominant 3-0 (25-22, 25-21, 25-15) victory over American University at Cassel Coliseum Friday evening. Senior Justine Record led the way for the Hokies as she posted her fourth double-double of the season after throwing down a match-best 13 kills and scooping up 11 digs.
Play began close in the opening set, but the Hokies (4-3) were able to break away from a 13-all tie. Tech eventually tallied a 20-14 lead that forced American (3-4) to call its final timeout of the set. The break helped the Eagles and eventually allowed them to rally for four-straight points, making it 23-20, but a Tech timeout regrouped the Hokies and they went on to take the first set, 25-22. Tech put up 14 kills in the set, and hit at a .207 clip, holding American to just nine kills and a .077 hitting percentage.
Back-and-forth play again began the second set but the Hokies were able to get things going earlier on. Teetering with leads and ties, a kill from sophomore Victoria Hamsher sparked Tech as it rallied for four straight points and cornered the Eagles into calling their first timeout of the set.
After the break in play, Record served up her third ace of the day, which gave her sole possession of seventh place on Tech’s all-time career aces list, upping her total to 140. The Hokies continued to roll and eventually extended their lead to as many as 11 points, but similar to the first set, they let American sneak back into it. Despite the late effort, Tech went on to claim a 25-21 win and go up 2-0.
Tech entered the third set prepared to close out the day. The Hokies took off from the gate and never looked back. American lingered around in the beginning but Tech kept its distance, extending its lead to as many as 10 points late in play. The Hokies eventually sealed the sweep with a 25-15 victory as they held American to a .000 hitting percentage.
Junior Cara Baarendse was the only other Hokie to tally double-digit kills in the match as she threw down 10. Hamsher came up big at the net, finishing the day with five blocks.
American’s Sara Rishell paced the Eagles with 10 of the team’s 29 kills in the match.
Action at the Hokie Invite will continue tomorrow with the Hokies facing Seton Hall at 12:30 p.m., and Tennessee later in the day at 7 p.m. Both of Tech’s matches tomorrow will be broadcast live on Hokies All-Access.
