BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team kept its home tournament winning streak alive as the squad took care of business against the Indiana Hoosiers, 3-1 (21-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-22), in the finale of the Hokie Tournament on Saturday night at Cassell Coliseum. Tech dropped the first set but bounced back and took the next three for its third victory of the opening weekend. This was the 21st consecutive win in a home tournament for the Hokies, as the streak dates back to the 2005 season.
Tech (3-0) battled with the Hoosiers (1-2) back-and-forth for most of the competitive game one. With the game tied 17-17, Indiana went on a 5-2 run to make a large enough lead and eventually take the set, 25-21. Kelci Marschall paced the Hoosiers with five kills on a .400 hitting percentage, while Caitlin Cox put up eight digs.
The Hokies turned things around in the second game, getting out to a 9-3 start and forcing Indiana to call its first timeout. Tech extended the lead to 20-16 which forced the Hoosiers to use their final timeout but the Hokies didn’t let the break disrupt their momentum as they scored the next four points out of the time out. Tech let up two points before clinching the 25-17 victory. Samantha Gostling led the way for Tech as she recorded five kills. As a team, the Hokies recorded a .276 hitting percentage, while holding Indiana to a -.031 clip.
Close play continued into the third set as Tech lost an early lead but later regained it after breaking a 19-19 tie and putting together a 6-3 run to close out the set and go up 2-1 in the match. It was Gostling again that highlighted the game with four of Tech’s 15 kills (.273), while the Hoosiers struggled again on attacks with a .118 hitting percentage. As a team, the Hokies recorded three total blocks in the set.
The Hoosiers came out strong in game four, battling with Tech until tied at 7-7 where the Hokies took control of the game. The Hokies never looked back after breaking the tie and never let Indiana get within less than one. Tech secured the victory with a 25-22 fourth-game win.
Gostling and redshirt junior Jennifer Wiker paced Tech with 12 kills apiece, while senior Erin Leaser tallied 41 assists and junior Morgan O’Neill dug up 14 balls for the Hokies. As a team, Tech took the edge with 11 blocks and 53 kills, hitting at a .256 clip.
Marschall led the way for the Hoosiers with 15 kills in the match, while setter Whitney Granado also came up with 41 assists and Caitlin Cox tallied 18 digs.
Tech named an all-tournament team for the weekend’s play. Breanna Holliday represented High Point and Caitlin Cox was honored from Indiana as the third- and fourth-place teams. From Cleveland State, Marie Fease and Amy Grabiec were honored. For the Hokies, O’Neill and sophomore Victoria Hamsher earned the accolades while junior Cara Baarendse garnered MVP honors.
The Hokies will travel to Lexington, Ky., next weekend for the Kentucky Tournament and their first match will be Friday, Sept. 2 at 5 p.m. First up for Tech is Ohio University.
