BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team cruised to its second straight victory, topping High Point, 3-1 (25-16, 24-26, 25-13, 25-12), on Saturday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum. Senior Justine Record highlighted the big win as she tied a career high with six service aces and took over eighth place in Tech’s all-time record books, upping her career total to 134.

Record began the day with two aces in her first four serves, and five in the first set, as the Hokies (2-0) got out to a dominant, 6-2, start. After a four-point run by the Hokies to put them ahead, 18-11, High Point (0-2) used its final timeout, which proved to be unhelpful as Record put down another ace immediately following the regrouping. Tech eventually took the set, 25-16.

High Point responded in the second set, fighting for a 26-24 win as back-and-forth play dominated the game. Courtney Johnk paced the Panthers with four kills and just one error, while Breanna Holliday put up six digs. Though sophomore Samantha Gostling put down five kills for the Hokies, High Point’s six blocks in the set disrupted the Hokies.

Even play would again open the third set, but Tech was able to put some distance between itself and the Panthers, taking an 11-7 lead early on. The Hokies were able to control set three by holding the Panthers to a -.071 hitting percentage, while also tallying four total blocks. Sophomore Victoria Hamsher paced the Hokies with four kills with just one error.

Tech jumped out to a 9-1 lead and never looked back in the fourth and final set. The Hokies tallied 16 kills and two aces to secure the victory and extend their home tournament winning streak to 20 games over the past six seasons.

Gostling and Record each led the way with 11 kills for Tech, while senior Erin Leaser racked up 31 assists. Hamsher paced the Tech defense, stretching out for six blocks on the day.

Johnk finished the match with a team-best nine kills as the Panthers were held to a .059 hitting percentage. Holliday finished the day with 20 digs.

The Hokie Tournament will wrap up this evening with two matches. First, the Panthers will take on Cleveland State at 5 p.m., which will be followed by Tech hosting the Hoosiers at 7 p.m.
