WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Virginia Tech Volleyball team continued its late-season road trip to Wake Forest this evening to take on the Demon Deacons in an ACC competition. Every set was close, with 29 ties and 10 lead changes, but Wake Forest came out on top with a 3-1 (25-22, 22-25, 25-18, 25-22) victory. The win lifts Wake to 18-11 (10-8 ACC), while the Hokies drop to 18-10 (9-9 ACC).
The first set was neck-and-neck throughout the frame, but after the Hokies took a 19-18 lead, Wake Forest won four points in a row to take its largest lead of the set, 22-19. Tech pulled back within one, but the Demon Deacons held onto their advantage, winning the first set, 25-22.
Tech struck back in the second set, pushing out to an early 12-8 lead. However, after the Hokies were up 16-13, the Demon Deacons rallied to tie the score at 16. The score differential stayed at no more than one for the next 10 plays, and soon it was tied at 21. A kill by Jennifer Wiker gave Tech its lead back, and back-to-back kills by Felicia Willoughby made it set-point. A Kadija Fornah kill kept Wake in the game, but a Deacon attack error finished off the frame in a 25-22 Hokie victory, tying the match at one set apiece.
After the third set started 2-2, Wake pulled ahead 6-3 and never looked back, maintaining a small lead throughout the frame, winning it 25-18. The Demon Deacons opened the fourth set with a 3-0 run, and while the Hokies stayed in it, they were unable to recover, dropping the fourth set, 25-22, and falling 3-1 in the match.
Jennifer Wiker led the Hokies with 14 kills, followed by a 13-kill effort by Cara Baarendse, who hit a team-best ,478, and Felicia Willoughby added 10 more. Justine Record led the defense with 13 digs, adding seven kills and a service ace, and Morgan O’Neill notched another 11 digs. Willoughby led the front row with five blocks, two solo, and Erin Leaser, who notched 44 assists, registered four blocks in the match. Freshman Allison Munter, making just her fourth career appearance at setter, registered three assists in the third set.
The Hokies conclude their road trip tomorrow afternoon when they take on the Blue Devils of Duke University in their final away match of the regular season. The ACC competition will begin at 4 p.m.
