BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team hosted the Eagles of Boston College this evening in an ACC competition. The Hokies scored early and often, defeating the Eagles 3-0 (25-16, 25-18, 25-14). The win lifts the Hokies to 16-8 (7-7 ACC), while the Eagles, still winless in ACC play, drop to 8-19 (0-14 ACC).
The first set started close and soon the score was tied at seven. The Hokies then went on a six-point run, due in part to kills by Felicia Willoughby and Victoria Hamsher and a block by Hamsher and Erin Leaser. Back-to-back kills by Tsvetelina Dureva made it 13-9, but the Hokies then shot up 20-10. The Eagles managed six more points in the set, but Jennifer Wiker provided the final two kills for the Hokies, as Tech took the first set, 25-16.
The Hokies got off to a strong start in the second set, opening the frame with a 5-0 run. The Eagles stayed in the game, closing the gap to two, 6-4, but the Hokies pushed back up 10-6 and soon were out in front 19-12. Boston College continued to fight, but a Willoughby kill finished of the Eagles, winning the second set, 25-18.
After opening the third frame in a 2-2 tie, the Hokies won the next eight straight points with the help of two kills from both Willoughby and Jennifer Wiker to make it 10-2. The Eagles did not go quietly, battling up to 14 points, but in the end, the Hokies took the third and final set by a score of 25-14.
Jennifer Wiker led the Hokies’ offense, hitting .385 with 13 kills and two blocks. Record followed with eight kills and no errors, hitting .381, adding nine digs, an assist, a block and two service aces. Hamsher and Willoughby each added seven kills, hitting .500 and .385, respectively, and Hamsher also stuffed a match-high three block assists.
Erin Leaser pitched in 38 assists, three digs and two block assists, and Morgan O’Neill and Amy Wengrenovich rounded out the defense, putting up 13 and nine digs, respectively.
Sophomore Liz Trinchere and freshman Allison Munter both made their third appearances of the season in the match. Trinchere hit .333 with a career-high three kills and two digs in two sets, and Munter had a career-high four assists and her first career dig. Freshman Corrie Sanders made her first career appearance in the third set, putting up and receiving two serves.
The Hokies close out their four-match homestand tomorrow evening, when they host the Terrapins of the University of Maryland in an ACC competition beginning at 6 p.m. LiveStats and All-Access audio/video live broadcasts will be available on hokiesports.com.
