Tech blanks NC State for 13th straight defeat of Wolfpack
Seven Hokies tallied double-digit kills or digs

RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team visited the North Carolina State University Wolfpack in their only matchup of the season and defeated the Wolfpack, 3-0 (25-22, 25-19, 25-20). The win lifted the Hokies to 14-7 (5-6 ACC), while NC State dropped to 12-11 (2-9 ACC).

The first set was close the whole way through, with the Wolfpack taking an early 5-3 lead. After falling behind 9-7, the Hokies won four straight points to get on top 11-9. While Tech’s largest lead in the set was just four points (17-13), the Hokies never surrendered their mid-set lead, winning the first frame, 25-22.

The Hokies won the first two points of the second set and that was a big enough lead to preserve throughout the entire frame, quickly jumping ahead 11-5 and taking the frame 25-19.

The Wolfpack had a chance early in set three, taking a 9-6 lead, but the Hokies rallied to tie the score at 10, thanks to a kill by Jennifer Wiker and two from Justine Record. The two teams traded points over the next six plays. With the score knotted at 13, the Hokies scored the next four points. The Wolfpack closed the gap 22-20, but kills from Cara Baarendse and Record made it match point and Kirsten Higareda closed it out with a her first service ace of the season.

Felicia Willoughby led the attack for the Hokies, registering 15 kills and a .481 hitting percentage. This brings her career total to 1,181, moving her past Rachel Julian (1999) and into eighth place all time on the Hokies’ career kills list. Wiker and Baarendse both had double-digit kills as well, notching 12 and 11, respectively, and Record followed closely with nine. Record led the defense, recording 14 digs, followed by 11 each from Morgan O’Neill and Erin Leaser, and 10 from Amy Wengrenovich. Additionally, Leaser put up 41 assists.

The Hokies return home on Friday night for a match with No. 24 Florida State in a rematch of their five-set match back in September. The competition will begin at 7 p.m.
