BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech Hokies earned their second sweep in three outings, defeating Wake Forest 3-0 (25-21, 25-18, 25-12) to close out a 2-0 weekend at Cassell Coliseum. Junior Erin Leaser fueled the Hokies’ victory, missing a triple-double by just one kill, registering 34 assists, 11 digs and a career-high nine kills. The win lifts the Hokies to 13-6 (4-5 ACC), while the Demon Deacons slip to 11-7 (4-4 ACC).
After a kill from Kristen White gave the Demon Deacons the first point of the match, the Hokies went up 2-1 and never fell behind. Tech soon ran out a huge 11-3 lead, but the Demon Deacons stormed back, tying the set at 12. The two teams traded points for the next 14 plays, Virginia Tech always taking the lead then Wake Forest tying it up, but the Hokies then pressed ahead 21-19. Back-to-back kills by Victoria Hamsher made it set-point, and Justine Record finished them off, taking the first set, 25-21.
The Demon Deacons hit their stride in the second set, opening the frame ahead 5-1. The Demon Deacons soon went up 10-6, but the Hokies rallied back, tying the set at 12. Quite like set one, the middle of the second game was neck-and-neck, but the Hokies then won six of the final seven points, winning the second set, 25-18.
Wake Forest opened the third set with a 4-1 lead, but the Hokies pushed back with a 4-0 run, taking a 5-4 lead. Tech then went on a 14-6 run, jumping out to a large lead, 19-10, and closed out the match with a 25-12 set win and a 3-0 shutout victory.
Justine Record led the match with 12 kills and added seven digs, two aces, two assists and a block. Freshman Victoria Hamsher led both teams with a .533 hitting percentage, registering 10 kills and adding a career-high two aces and three block assists. Felicia Willoughby had another strong outing, attacking at a .450 clip with 10 kills, two assists and two blocks. Her 10 kills jumped her past Corrie Bundy ’98 into ninth-place all-time in career kills, with 1,159.
Erin Leaser had a career match, putting up 34 assists, 11 digs, a career-high nine kills and a block assist. Amy Wengrenovich shined on defense, notching 12 digs, and Cara Baarendse and Morgan O’Neill each added seven more. Baarendse also notched eight kills and three assists, and Jennifer Wiker registered another seven kills.
The Hokies hit the road next weekend to take on North Carolina and NC State in their only matchups of the season. The two North Carolina teams are the only ACC members that Hokies only face once. The Hokies will take on the Tar Heels at 7 p.m. on Friday and the Wolfpack at 7 p.m. on Saturday.
