COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team headed to College Park this evening to take on the Terrapins of the University of Maryland. The Hokies played close to the Terps, but Maryland had more finishing power, defeating the Hokies in a deceptively close 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-21, 25-23). The win lifts the Terrapins to 13-5 (4-2 ACC), while the Hokies sink to 10-6 (1-5 ACC).

After opening the match up 2-0, the Hokies quickly fell behind, 6-3. Tech rallied to make it 6-5, then tied the set at nine. The Terrapins then went up 15-12 and despite a Hokie timeout, Maryland soon had an 18-14 lead. The Terps extended that to 20-15 before the Hokies pushed back within two, 22-20. Maryland, however, took three of the final four points to win the first set, 25-21.

The Hokies were in control early, opening the second set 3-1. The Terps won the next three straight to take the lead, but the Hokies scored four in a row shortly after that to get back on top, 9-7. The Hokies ran out to their largest lead of the set, 14-10, but the Terrapins responded with a 5-1 run to tie the set at 15. The Terps were on a roll, going up 21-18, but the Hokies then scored three straight to tie the set at 21. Nevertheless, the Terps won the final four points of the set, taking the frame, 25-21, once again.

Tech started the third set out in front, jumping ahead 4-1. The team held onto its lead for the first half of the set, but the Terps then rallied to tie the set at nine. Maryland then took its first lead of the set, up 14-11 and held onto it for the majority of the set, still up three late, 23-20. The Hokies forced the Terps into a 23-23 tie, but a kill by Lisa Scott and an attack error by Samantha Gostling put the icing on the cake, handing the Terps a 25-23 victory in set three, and their first sweep of the Hokies since Sept. 30, 2005.

Cara Baarendse led the match with 11 kills, hitting .429 with just two errors in 21 attempts. Justine Record had a strong outing, notching 12 digs, seven kills and three block assists, and Erin Leaser hit .400 with five kills, 32 assists and three block assists. Victoria Hamsher and Felicia Willoughby added to the Hokies’ blocking total of eight, as Hamsher had three block assists and Willoughby stuffed four assists and a block solo. Morgan O’Neill led both teams with 19 digs and Laura Misiewicz added eight more.

The Hokies return to action on Sunday with a trip to Boston College. Tech takes on the Eages at 1 p.m.
