CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team traveled to the University of Miami this evening to take on the Hurricanes in ACC play. Erin Leaser earned her fourth double-double of the season and Cara Baarendse and Felicia Willoughby both hit over .400, but the tough Hurricane squad was too much for the Hokies, taking the match, 3-0 (25-18, 25-19, 25-14). The win lifts the Hurricanes to 11-2 (1-1 ACC), while the Hokies fall to 10-2 (1-1 ACC).
The Hurricanes were off and running early in the first set, earning a quick 4-1 lead and never letting the Hokies get within one, taking the frame, 25-18. The Hokies came back hungry in the second set, jumping out in front 13-9. However, after the Hokies were up 17-13, the Hurricanes won six points in a row to take a 19-17 lead. They then outscored the Hokies 6-2 in the final eight plays, earning a 25-19 victory in set two. The Hurricanes rode their hot streak into the third set, winning 25-14, and earning a 3-0 sweep of the Hokies.
Sophomore Cara Baarendse led both teams with 14 kills in the match, registering seven digs and a .444 hitting percentage. Felicia Willoughby added nine more kills, a block and an assist, and struck a match-leading .467 percentage. Jennifer Wiker totaled seven kills and a dig, and assisted both of the team’s blocks.
Junior Erin Leaser recorded her fourth double-double of the season, notching 35 assists and 11 digs in the match. Senior Amy Wengrenovich added nine digs, and Justine Record notched eight more, adding an assist and a service ace.
The Hokies return to action on Sunday to take on the No. 13 Florida State Seminoles. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
