CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball team swept the Towson University Tigers (25-20, 25-18, 25-13) this afternoon to go undefeated for the third weekend in a row. Justine Record led the pack with 11 kills in the match, propelling the Hokies to their second consecutive 10-1 start. After opening their season 10-0, the Tigers have now lost five straight matches, coming in at 10-5.
Tech jumped out to an early 8-4 lead in the first set, but the Tigers rallied to tie the score at 10. After trading points with Towson over the next 10 plays, the Hokies outscored the Tigers 10-5, taking the first frame, 25-20.
Set two started tight, but the Hokies once again gained momentum in the second half, grabbing a 25-18 victory in the second set.
The Hokies showed no mercy in the third frame, quickly jumping out in front 12-5 and never looking back. The Tigers managed just 13 points in the set, dropping the match to the Hokies, 3-0.
Freshman Victoria Hamsher had a career day, leading the match with a whopping 10 block assists and striking at a .636 clip with seven kills. There are just five Hokies in program history, including teammate Felicia Willoughby, who have stuffed more block assists in a single match. Justine record led both teams with 11 kills, and Willoughby and Cara Baarendse each notched six. Erin Leaser racked up 25 assists in the match, and Amy Wengrenovich came away with 13 digs.
The team slashed its season-high of 16 block assists, registering 28 in the match, and achieved a solid .337 attack percentage.
Felicia Willoughby earned her fourth all-tournament selection of the season, and was joined by first-time selection Jennifer Wiker after her tremendous performance against Virginia.
The Hokies return to action next weekend for their toughest road trip of the season, taking on Miami at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 24, followed No. 15 Florida State at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
