BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Cara Baarendse and Justine Record combined for 34 kills this evening to lead the Hokies to a 3-1 victory over the University of Missouri Tigers (7-2, 0-0 Big 12) and earn Tech its second consecutive tournament sweep. The Hokies (8-1, 0-0 ACC) extended their current winning streak to six matches and remained perfect in neutral play, posting a 4-0 record with one neutral match left in the regular season.

The Hokies got off to a strong start in the first set, soon leaping out in front, 13-6. The Tigers outscored the Hokies, 13-9, in the next stretch to pull closer to Tech, 22-19, but the Hokies won three of the next four points to win the first set, 25-20.

The next set was tight, with nine ties and three lead changes, and soon the score was knotted at 20 apiece. Consecutive kills by Paola Ampudia and Brittney Brimmage pushed the Tigers up 22-20, but Cara Baarandse narrowed the gap with a kill of her own. Ampudia responded with another kill, making it 23-21, but Baarendse followed suit with her 10^th kill of the match to keep the Hokies close. However, Ampudia notched her fifth kill of the set to reach set-point, and a block by Weiwen Wang and Catie Wilson handed the Tigers a 25-22 victory and tied the match at one.

Tech took no prisoners in the third set, quickly putting it away, 25-12, and regaining control of the match, up 2-1.

Set four was exciting, with eight ties and five lead changes, but after the score was tied 14-14, the Hokies went up 21-16 and the Tigers never recovered, as the Hokies took the fourth and final set, 25-22, and won the match 3-1.

Cara Baarendse led the match with 18 kills and struck at a solid .441 clip, adding five digs, three block assists, and a career-high three service aces. Justine Record registered her second double-double of the season with 16 kills, 13 digs, two service aces, three blocks, an assist and a .464 hitting percentage. Felicia Willoughby added 13 kills and four block assists, leading the match with a .526 hitting percentage, and freshman Victoria Hamsher notched five kills and tied the match lead with four block assists.

As a team, the Hokies hit .323 and stuffed a total of 12 blocks. Erin Leaser recorded a season-high 57 assists, Amy Wengrenovich notched 13 digs, and Morgan O’Neill added nine more on defense.

For the second week in a row, Cara Baarendse was awarded most valuable player and Felicia Willoughby was named to the all-tournament team.

The Hokies look forward to their first ACC matchup of the season, when they take on in-state rival Virginia on Friday, Sept. 17, at the Cavalier Invitational in Charlottesville, Va. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
