BLACKSBURG, Va. – Virginia Tech hosted the Long Island University Blackbirds this afternoon in the fourth of six volleyball matches at the 2010 Hilton Garden Hokie Invitational. The Hokies stayed hot, downing their third opponent of the season, 3-0 (25-18, 25-18, 30-28), and improving to 5-1 (0-0 ACC) on the year. The loss drops the Blackbirds to 0-5 (0-0 NEC).
The Hokies got off to a tremendous start, quickly running the score to 7-0, backed by seven consecutive serves by senior Amy Wengrenovich. The early deficit was too much for the Blackbirds to overcome, as the Hokies took the first set, 18-25.
Set two started close, but after tying the score 8-8, the Hokies went on a 10-2 run to take an 18-10 lead and put away the set, 25-18.
The Blackbirds held Tech close in the third set, and after the Hokies took a 21-14 lead, Long Island battled its way back into a 23-23 tie. The two teams traded points for the next 14 plays, but the Hokies held on and came out victorious in the final set by a score of 30-28 and sweeping their second consecutive match in the Hilton Garden Hokie Invitational.
Sophomore Cara Baarendse led the match with 13 kills in 18 attempts with just one error for a career-high .667 hitting percentage. Freshman Samantha Gostling stuffed 12 kills of her own, slashing her attack percentage personal best, hitting at a .474 clip. Hanna Gibeau led the Blackbirds with 10 of Long Island’s 34 kills.
Junior Erin Leaser notched 43 assists and was one dig shy of her third double-double, recording nine on defense. Amy Wengrenovich led the Hokies with 15 digs, and Felicia Willoughby notched two block solos and one block assists. Her performance this weekend has increased her career blocking totals to 368 assists and 448 total blocks, just six assists shy of the Hokies’ all-time record and four total blocks away from third place.
Willoughby will seek her 1,000th career kill this evening in the final match of this weekend’s tournament, taking on Jacksonville State for the tournament title beginning at 7 p.m.
