Gergen earns honor for second time

BLACKSBURG, Va. – Senior Jill Gergen and freshman Cara Baarendse of the Virginia Tech volleyball squad were named to the 2009 ACC All-Academic team ACC Commissioner John Swofford announced on Tuesday.

Gergen is a two-time member of the conference academic squad. The Topeka, Kan., native played in all 31 matches last season and led the team with 481 digs from the libero position. Gergen received her bachelor’s degree in mathematics and will receive her master’s in education this summer.

Baarendse, a marketing major, earned ACC All-Freshman honors for her strong campaign in 2009. The Mason, Ohio, native set a Tech freshman record with a .354 hitting percentage on the season, a mark that ranks third all-time among all Hokies. Baarnedse ended the year with 280 kills and 67 blocks.

To qualify for selection to the ACC All-Academic team, student-athletes must have earned a 3.0 grade-point average during the fall semester and have maintained a 3.0 GPA for their careers.
