BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech volleyball squad ended the 2009 campaign with a hard-earned victory over the Virginia Cavaliers, 3-1 (25-18, 25-15, 22-25, 25-20), Wednesday night in Cassell Coliseum.
Tech (19-12, 9-11 ACC) honored its five seniors, Gemma Donovan, Jill Gergen, Betsy Horowitz, Michelle Lang and Taylor Parrish, before the match and then hit .255 and blocked eight attacks to send them out with a victory on senior night. The Cavaliers (12-19, 7-13 ACC) struck at a .108 clip and totaled three blocks in the contest.
After Virginia led in the early stages of set one, Tech went on a 5-0 run, all on sophomore Justine Record’s service, to pull out to a 13-11 advantage. The Hokies continued the run winning five of the next seven points to take control of the period and cruise to victory, 25-18.
The Hokies dominated set two hitting .385 and only allowing the Cavaliers to muster a .094 hitting percentage. Tech opened the stanza winning five of the first six points and never looked back. Virginia would not close within four points of the rest of the frame, capturing the second set, 25-15.
Virginia battled back coming out of the locker room in the third set. The two squads combined to tie each other 11 times in the close period. Even at 21, two Hokie attack errors gave the Cavaliers some breathing room, and they maintained the advantage the rest of the way, winning the third stanza, 25-22.
A fast start paced the Hokies in the fourth set, as they led 13-7 early. Virginia clawed back with a 6-0 spurt to cut the cushion to one, but Tech refused to relinquish the lead. Both squads exchanged points, until the Hokies reeled off three straight to press out to a 20-15 lead. Tech carried the margin to a 25-20 win, sealed by Record’s career-high fifth service ace, in set four, and a 3-1 victory in the match.
Record led the Hokies with 15 kills and the five service aces, four of which came in the first two frames. Freshman Cara Baarendse added 10 kills in the matchup. Senior Jill Gergen earned her ninth 20-plus-dig match of the season, tallying 21, to cap her Hokie career, while Erin Leaser recorded 48 assists and 14 digs for her eighth double-double of the year. Freshman Morgan O’Neill and Amy Wengrenovich registered 14 and 13 digs, respectively, in the contest, and freshman Kirsty Blue led the way with four blocks.
