ATLANTA, Ga. – The Virginia Tech volleyball squad dropped their final road contest of the season, falling to Georgia Tech, 3-0 (16-25, 23-25, 19-25), at O’Keefe Gymnasium in Atlanta, Ga., on Saturday night.

Virginia Tech (18-12, 8-11 ACC) fell behind early as the Yellow Jackets (20-9, 14-5 ACC) started out on fire to open the match. Georgia Tech raced out to an early 8-2 advantage. The Hokies would cut that gap in half at 12-9, but could get no closer than three the rest of the period. The Yellow Jackets responded and pushed the lead back out to six, and ran away with the opening frame, 25-16.

Set two proved to be the most competitive stanza of the contest. The Hokies pulled out to a 6-3 cushion, but Georgia Tech evened the set back up at eight all. Virginia Tech went on a 4-1 spurt to gain a 15-11 lead, and appeared to be in control of the period, but Georgia Tech answered with a 5-1 run later, to tie the Hokies at 17 apiece. The two squads tied each other five more times in the set, until back-to-back kills by the Yellow Jackets’ Monique Mead and Asia Stawicka sealed the second stanza for Georgia Tech, 25-23.

Both squads stayed close in the early stages of the third period, but a 6-0 run by Georgia Tech put the Yellow Jackets squarely in control, at 15-9. The Hokies would never threaten again in the period, as Georgia Tech carried the six-point margin to a 25-19 set- three victory, and a sweep in the contest.

Junior Felicia Willoughby and sophomore Justine Record recorded 10 kills each to lead the squad. Willoughby recorded her 10 kills on a team-high .471 hitting percentage and added four blocks in the affair. Sophomore Erin Leaser doled out 31 assists, while senior Jill Gergen totaled 10 digs.

Virginia Tech hit .241 in the match, but allowed the Yellow Jackets to strike at a .354 clip. The Hokies blocked six attacks, and committed 12 service aces in the contest. Georgia Tech stuffed eight attacks in the matchup.

The Hokies return home to Cassell Coliseum for the season finale, hosting Virginia on Wednesday on senior day. Results will be available on hokiesports.com.
