Blacksburg, Va. - The Virginia Tech volleyball team wasted no time in taking care of their second opponent of the Hawthorn Suites Hokie Invitational Saturday afternoon at Cassell Coliseum, defeating Winston-Salem State 3-0 (25-6, 25-10, 25-12) in little over an hour.
The Hokies (2-0, 0-0 ACC) blitzed the Rams of Winston-Salem State (0-2, 0-0 MEAC), hitting .556 as a team. Freshman Alison Blasingame led the way with eight kills, while junior Gemma Donovan recorded a career-high eight assists. Senior Sarah Muñoz and sophomore Amy Wengrenovich both achieved career bests in hitting percentage, hitting .500 and .667 respectively.
Tech overwhelmed the Rams early, jumping out to leads in the first and second sets, which never were threatened. In the final set, WSSU stayed with the Hokies, before Blasingame took over, registering five kills in the third frame.
WSSU and the Hokies return to the court tonight at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. respectively. Tech will take on Coastal Carolina for the tournament championship, while Winston-Salem State will battle fellow MEAC member Maryland Eastern-Shore for third place. Coastal Carolina outlasted Maryland-Eastern Shore in five sets earlier Saturday.
