Piazza finishes fifth in 800 at USA Outdoor Championships
Former Tech standout concluded a collegiate career in which he earned first-team All-America honors twice while in Blacksburg

Drew Piazza, a track and field standout who recently concluded his Virginia Tech career at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finished in fifth place in the 800-meter run at the USA Outdoor Championships held at Sacramento State in Sacramento, California over the weekend.
Piazza, from Danvers, Massachusetts, broke his personal best in the event for the second time at the meet. He ran the final in a time of 1 minute, 45.69 seconds, and he came in less than two seconds behind winner Donavan Brazier, who claimed the gold medal with a time of 1:44.14. Piazza, the school record holder, ran his semifinal race in a time of 1:45.83.
Piazza, a transfer from New Hampshire, earned first-team All-America honors during both the indoor and the outdoor seasons this winter and spring. He won the silver medal in the 800 at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. During the outdoor season, he claimed a gold medal at the ACC meet, while coming in sixth at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
