BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s track and field team came in sixth in the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) Program of the Year standings as announced by the association on Tuesday.
The USTFCCCA’s Program of the Year award goes annually to the most outstanding cross country/track and field programs in each of the NCAA’s three divisions and for each gender. The award honors the school that has achieved the most success in each academic year (spanning the cross country, indoor track and field, and outdoor track and field seasons) based on the school’s finish at the NCAA Championships.
Oregon captured the John McDonnell Program of Year Award after winning the national title at the NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships in March and finishing fourth at both the NCAA Cross Country Championships last October and the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships last week.
The 2015-16 season marked a banner one for the Tech men’s squad. The Hokies came in 27th in the race for the team title at the NCAA’s cross country meet and recorded top-15 finishes at both the NCAA’s indoor (15th) and outdoor (eighth) competitions. Their performance at the outdoor meet marked their third top-10 finish in the past six years.
Eight members of the Tech men’s squad earned All-America honors in cross country and track and field this past academic year. Thomas Curtin led the way with three, capturing All-America awards in all three seasons (cross country, indoor track, and outdoor track).
Others recognized as All-Americans were pole vaulters Deakin Volz (indoor), Torben Laidig (outdoor), and Brad Johnson (outdoor), along with runners Neil Gourley (outdoor) and Patrick Joseph (outdoor) and throwers Tomas Kruzliak (outdoor) and Marek Barta (outdoor).
