BLACKSBURG - After yet another record-setting weekend, the Virginia Tech track & field team looks to build momentum heading into the conference meet in May at both the Radford Invitational and the Payton Jordan Invitational.
A group of the Hokies’ sprinters, jumpers, and throwers will compete in the New River Valley at the Radford Invite on Friday and Saturday.
Tech’s distance runners will travel to one of the most elite meets in the country on Sunday - Stanford’s Payton Jordan Invite. The distance squad returns to action after a week off following the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic on April 16 and 17.
For the throwers, last weekend Marek Barta set a new program record in the discus while Irena Sediva set both a facility and meet record in the javelin at the Virginia Challenge. Tomas Kruzliak took third in the hammer throw to rank seventh nationally.
Courtney Blanden led the sprinters with three top-five finishes at Auburn’s War Eagle Invite, including two personal records and a season best time. Blanden ranks sixth in program history in the 400 meters with her fourth place ranking seventh in the record books for her 200-meter finish.
For the distance group, Thomas Curtin, Neil Gourley, and Rachel Pocratsky led the team with top finishes in each of their respective events. Gourley won the 5k in 14:02.40 to place fifth all-time standing in the Hokies’ record book. In the 1,500 meters, Pocratsky took the crown in 4:19.82, a time that ranks fifth in program history. Curtin led the men in the 1500 meters, clocking in at 3:44.93 to earn fourth place overall and rank ninth in program history.
The Hokies wrap up their regular season Wednesday at the Liberty Twilight meet before hosting the Roanoke Outdoor Classic at the Johnson/Miller Track Complex on Thursday, May 5.
