SALEM, Va. - In one of the final meets before the NCAA East Preliminary Round, the Virginia Tech track & field team grabbed 10 first-place finishes, but the women's pole vault was the showcase at the Roanoke/Virginia Tech Twilight as Martina Schultze broke her school record in the pole vault for the third time in less than two weeks.
After initially breaking her record less than two weeks ago at the Highlander Invitational with a vault of 14-2.5 (4.33m), the sophomore topped that mark last week at the Liberty Twilight by clearing 14-3.25 (4.35m). The successful run of vaults continued tonight as Schultze moved up to fourth nationally with her clearance of 14-4 (4.37m) on her third attempt.
In the sprints, Tadashi Pinder (22.07) and Elizabeth Powell (25.53) earned wins in the 200 meters, while Jeff Artis-Gray won the 110-meter hurdles as he clocked in at 14.07.
To go along with her win in the 200 meters, Powell also won the long jump, her first time competing in the event, with mark of 17-8.25 (5.39m) on her final attempt. Freshman Johnna Dominick set a new personal best in the high jump as she won the event by clearing 5-4.25 (1.63m) on her first attempt at the height.
In the women's distance events, Shannon Morton won the 800 meters, finishing in 2:08.57, while Amanda Smith recorded a time of 4:30.24 to claim the 1500 meters. On the men's side, Darren Barlow had the lone win in the 5,000 meters with a time of 15:15.06.
The women's 4x400 relay team of Morton, Smith, Katarina Smiljanec and Frances Dowd recorded the top time in the event at 3:49.19.
The distance team will head to Charlottesville, Va., on Saturday for the Virginia Challenge, Tech's final meet of the season before postseason declarations are due.
