10 Hokies earn All-America honors
Tech places six on first team, five on second team

NEW ORLEANS – Ten Virginia Tech track & field student-athletes have been named All-Americans for the 2013 indoor track & field season, the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) officially announced Monday. The Hokies had six named to the first team and five to the second team.

First-team honors were given to those who placed in the championships’ top eight or were a member of an eight-person final. Second team honors were handed out to those who earned final classifications between ninth and 16th place.

Tech’s six first-team members include: senior Jeff Artis-Gray (long jump/seventh), senior Ronnie Black (high jump/fourth), redshirt-senior Will Mulherin (3,000 meters/seventh), sophomore Martina Schultze (pole vault/third), junior Darrell Wesh (60 meters) and senior Alexander Ziegler (weight throw/national champion).

Ziegler capped his career as a three-time national champion and seven-time All-American. Black is now a four-time All-American, while Schultze and Wesh earned their third. Mulherin ends his career as a two-time track All-American and two-time cross country All-American.

In addition, Tomas Kruzliak (weight throw/10th) and the men's distance medley relay team of Artis-Gray, Tihut Degfae, Ryan Hagen and Michael Hammond which finished 12th were named second team All-Americans. With his two honors at the championships, Artis-Gray is now a four-time All-American, while Hammond concludes his career as a three-time honoree. Degfae, Hagen and Kruzliak each earned the first honor of their careers.

As a team, the Hokie men finished in a tie for ninth with 19 points, the second-best finish for the program at the indoor national meet.

288 men and 266 women earned USTFCCCA All-America distinctions for the 2013 NCAA Division I Indoor Track & Field season.
