BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – Virginia Tech freshman George Carter (Blacksburg, Va.) competed on day one of the 2012 USA Junior Outdoor Track & Field Championships at the Robert C. Haugh Track and Field Complex on the campus of Indiana University Friday.

Carter finished ninth in heat one and 13th overall in the 1500 meters in a time of 3:53.72. Carter just missed qualifying for the Sunday's final based on time as 12 men, the top three finishers in each of the two heats, plus the next six fastest times advanced.

Tomorrow, Tech’s Sarah Rapp (5000 meters) and Thomas Curtin (10000 meters) will be in action at the USA Juniors. The women’s 5k is scheduled for 8 p.m., while the men’s 10k is at 8:30 p.m.

The USA Junior Championships (for athletes ages 19 and under) serves as a qualifier for this year’s IAAF World Junior Track & Field Championships as top performers will have the opportunity to be part of the American team that will compete in Barcelona, Spain from July 10th to July 15th.
