Stone garners weekly awards

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech men’s swimming and diving freshman Lane Stone is off to a strong start in his collegiate career, earning ACC Swimmer of the Week as well as CollegeSwimming.com National Swimmer of the Week as announced Tuesday.

Stone racked up a trio of first place finishes over the weekend, helping the H2Okies men to wins over Duke and No. 20 Florida State. In his collegiate debut, Stone claimed the top times in the 200 free (1:38.78), 500 free (4:27.24) and 1000 free (9:20.51).

Reke Gyorgy was also recognized by collegeswimming.com as the ACC women’s performer of the week. The Tech sophomore had four first place finishes as the Hokies women defeated No. 20 Duke and No. 23 Florida State. Gyorgy won the 200 free (1:50.45), 400 IM (4:18.41), 200 back (1:58.35) and 200 IM (1:59.87).

The H2Okies will be back in the pool on Friday, hosting Queens, VMI and Liberty (women) at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 20 at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.
