H2Okie divers qualify three for NCAAs on first day of Zone A Championships

Peters, Schiesl and Eduardo Castro-Silva automatically qualify in their respective events

CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. - Three divers representing the Virginia Tech swimming and diving team qualified for NCAA Championships on day one of the NCAA Zone A Diving Championships at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center on Monday.

Sophomores Ben Shiesl and Eduardo Castro-Silva punched their ticket to Indianapolis in the men’s one meter while sophomore Ashlynn Peters qualified in the three meter, the same event she claimed the ACC title in two weeks ago.

The highest scorer in the prelims with a score of 383.35, Schiesl went on place second in the finals with 12-dive score of 730.30. Castro-Silva finished fifth overall with a 644.55 to nab his automatic qualifying score.

Peters’ performance in the finals propelled to a sixth place finish, a final score of 580.95 and a spot at NCAAs in the three meter. Despite a strong prelims that saw her score a 293.85, redshirt sophomore Ashley Buchter nearly picked up an automatic qualifying spot but missed by a half a points on two lists. True freshman Miranda Eberle also barely qualified after finishing 10th in the finals with a 561.10.

Both Buchter and Eberle, along with Mauro Castro-Silva and Thomas Shinholser, are in position to clinch automatic qualifying spots in tomorrow’s events.
