BLACKSBURG – After a strong first season with the Virginia Tech swimming and diving program, sophomore Norbert Szabo will compete in the 800 freestyle relay for his native Hungary in the upcoming Olympic Games in Rio de Janerio.
"Norbert has accomplished a lifelong dream by qualifying for the Hungarian Olympic team,” said head swimming and diving coach Ned Skinner. “He has a knack for setting his goals high and finding a way to accomplish them. We are very proud of Norbert and excited about his future in Rio and subsequent sophomore year with the Hokies."
Szabo drastically improved his times in his events by the end of his freshman campaign with the H20kies. At the ACC Championships, the Budapest native finished ninth overall in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:44.32. His fastest time of the season in the 100 freestyle was a 45.79 on Jan. 16. The Budapest native has also posted top times of 46.80 in the 100 butterfly, 1:43.37 in the 200 butterfly and a 1:44.64 in the 200 individual medley.
With the help of Szabo, Tech finished the season with an 11-0 record in dual meets and a No. 24 ranking in the CSCAA poll.
