Fiala and Owen earn spots in semis at U.S. Olympic Swim Trials

OMAHA, Neb. – Rising seniors Brandon Fiala and Robert Owen will represent the Virginia Tech swimming and diving program in tonight’s semifinals of the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials in Omaha after posting top 16 times in their events earlier this afternoon.

Fiala placed 15th overall in the 200 meter individual medley with a time of 2:01.91 and Owen finished fifth in the 200 meter backstroke with an impressive time of 1:58.01. The 200 IM will begin at approximately 9:20 and the semis for 200 backstroke will kick-off at 8:25.

Both swimmers had advanced in the Trials earlier in the week with Owen listed as an alternate in the 400 IM and Fiala competing in the semis of the 100 breaststroke.

NBC is scheduled to air tonight’s action from 8-9 p.m. EST before switching over to NBC Sports Network at 9 p.m. Fiala will be competing alongside 18-time Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps and 200 IM world record holder Ryan Lochte this evening.
