GREENSBORO, N.C. – Virginia Tech junior Brandon Fiala has been named the 2015-16 Atlantic Coast Conference Men’s Swimming & Diving Scholar-Athlete of the Year and headlines the All-ACC Academic Men’s Swimming & Diving Team, as announced Monday by the ACC.

The Hokies had a total of eight swimmers and divers recognized on both of the All-ACC Academic Swimming & Diving Teams. Tech had three on the women’s team and five on the men’s.

A finance and accounting double major from Centreville, Virginia, Fiala earned First Team All-America honors in the 200 individual medley, 100 breastroke, and 200 breastroke at the NCAA Championship. At the ACC Championship, Fiala set two meet records to go with his three medals, two gold and one silver and was named the Championship Most Valuable Swimmer.

Maggie Gruber and Weronika Paluszek were named to the All-ACC Academic Women's Swimming and Diving team for the second time. Fiala earns the honor for the third time while Logan Stevens is on the team for the second time. Jessica Hespeler, Benjamin Schiesl, Zach Switzer and Michal Szuba all earned the honors for the first time.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.

Minimum academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0 grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one’s academic career for undergraduate students. Athletic achievements during the most recent season are also considered in selecting the All-ACC Academic Team.

The ACC Honor Roll, which recognizes all conference student-athletes with a grade point average of 3.0 for the current academic year, will be released in July.
