ATLANTA - The Virginia Tech men’s swimming and diving team wrapped up day two of competition at the 2016 NCAA National Championships on Thursday night.
Junior Brandon Fiala earned All-America honors with an eighth place finish in the 200 yard IM, finishing in 1:42.77 and earning 11 team points.
"We are very proud of Brandon and his accomplishments. He has worked so hard for this and I am pleased it has paid off. Tomorrow is a great opportunity for us and we are ready to go after it," said head coach Ned Skinner.
During the 200-yard IM prelims, Fiala broke his previously set Virginia Tech record with a time of 1:41.95.
The Hokies 400 relay team, featuring Robert Owen, Fiala, Brent Benedict and Lucas Bureau, finished 18th on Thursday with a time of 3:09.05
Norbert Szabo, a freshman, finished with the 23rd fastest time in the 200 IM prelims, 1:44.64.
Five Hokies will compete in the prelims on Friday. Owen, a junior, will swim the 400 IM and enters with the seventh fastest time among the field at 3:41.08
Szabo will continue his NCAA Championship debut in the first heat of the 100 fly. Bureau, a senior, brings a 1:34.46 time to the 200 free prelim. Fiala will return to the pool to compete in the prelims of the 100 yard breast, where he has the third-fastest time, 51.86.
Tech currently sits in 21st place with 11 points.
In the 1-meter event, Logan Stevens finished 23rd in the prelims, earning a score of 317.65 while Benjamin Schiesl was 27th with a score of 310.55. Mauro Castro-Silva scored 300.95 points and finished in the 35th position.
The Hokies will be back in the pool at 10 a.m. with tomorrow's events including the prelims for the 400 IM, 100 fly, 200 free, 100 breast, 100 back, 3-meter diving and the 200 medley relay. Diving trials will begin at noon with consolations following 15 minutes after the completion of trials. Finals will start at 6 p.m.
