BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech swimming and diving teams both hold leads over Notre Dame and Pittsburgh through 20 events going into Saturday. The meet is being broadcast on HokiesXtra.
The No. 22/29 Virginia Tech men are up 129-55 over Pittsburgh and 125-58 over Notre Dame. The No. 27 women’s team is leading Pittsburgh 107-77 and Notre Dame 97-87.
“Very solid start today. I liked the determination in our racing. Lucas Bureau and Brandon Fiala were impressive as was Weronika Paluszek and Jessica Hespeler. We look forward to day two and we are excited to compete,” head coach Ned Skinner said.
Zach Switzer and Robert Owen tied first in the 400 IM with a time of 3:57.10. Lucas Bureau won the 100 fly in 48.81 and the 100 free in 45.18. Fiala and Justin Edwards finished first and second in the 100 breast with times of 55.69 and 56.97, respectively.
Michal Szuba won the men’s 1,650 in 15:35.34. The 200 medley relay was also won by Tech’s A relay. The Tech A relay in the women’s 800 free won with a time of 7:29.21.
The Hokies 200 free relay A team won with a time of 1:22.16, beating Notre Dame’s A relay team by .57. The 800-relay team came in first with a time of 6:43.78.
Maggie Gruber won the 100 fly with a time of 55.11. Fiona Donnelly won the 400 IM with a time of 4:23.14. Paluszek swam a time of 1:02.89 in the 100 breast to finish first. Hespeler swam a 16:44.99 in the 1,650 free to claim the victory. The women’s 200 medley relay A team won with a 1:43.06.
In the men’s 1-meter, Tech’s Logan Stevens, Mauro Castro-Silva and Ben Schiesl finished second, third and fourth.
The meet will continue tomorrow morning at 10 a.m. at the Christiansburg aquatic center.
